Josh

April 14th, 1977-Oct 22nd, 2005

My cousin Josh, here at 19 years old, probably just months after being diagnosed with Schizophrenia. This year it's hitting me harder, because he died at 28, my age right now. 28 is a fairly average lifespan for a male living with his disease, but I feel like, at 28, MY life has just started. Josh didn't have an easy life. He needed to take anti-psychotic medication that made him feel like just a shadow of his true self. He was, more often than not, misunderstood. I'll admit, I had a hard time understanding him. He was one of the most compassionate human beings I've ever met, he felt and loved deeply. I am thankful that Josh no longer feels tortured, but he is truly missed by his family and friends.

A strict vegetarian, Josh cared deeply for all living things.

Josh and his uncle Scott (my dad), no doubt enjoying each other's company in a MUCH better place.

  1. What an amazing tribute to your cousin! I have a friend who has been diagnosed w/schizodefective disorder and what a difficult life (more importantly) the affected person and their family and friends. I pray daily for my friend as I love him so much regardless of his disorder.

  2. I'm sorry Sadie for the though parts. I find this tribute amazing and humbling. Your story is incredible that you are able to also treasure some aspects of what was misunderstood.
I love that picture of the frog...So sweet. I just think of my boys...It's a hard world sometimes hey?
Thanks for this post. Probably one of the most inspiring posts I have read i context. I admire Josh for trying to fix it, his parents for loving him, and you for this.
The beauty that you just brought forth allowed me to see a glimpse of the compassion of God.
    Thank you
